When the chartered bus failed to show up to evacuate them, Malaysians in Ukraine were forced to travel in a convoy of four cars towards Lviv, about 80km from the Polish border.

The rescue effort was led by First Secretary Fadhilah Daud, who was on her first overseas posting. A Singaporean tagged along for the ride too.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Saifuddin Abdullah, the convoy has safely reached the Malaysian embassy in Poland.

The convoy made up of 9 Malaysians, 2 dependents and a Singaporean safely reached the Korczowa-Krakovets border between Ukraine and Poland on 27 February in the early morning.

They were greeted by two officials from the Malaysian embassy in Poland. The group is now on the road again, heading to Warsaw and expected to return to Kuala Lumpur soon.

Netizens were relieved to find out that the group managed to reach their destination safely. They also praised Fadhilah for her quick thinking while leading the group.

For those who wondered why the group seemed slow to evacuate, a netizen explained that embassy officials are always the last ones to get out.

This is because it’s their duty to make sure their countrymen get out of the country safely first in any crisis.
