The National Security Council (MKN) has issued a warning today (2 January 2022) to advise the public to be vigilant during the high tide phenomenon along the West Coast of Malaysia.

The high tide is estimated to take place for four days from 2 to 5 January (Sunday to Wednesday).

Although the high tide phenomenon is of a smaller scale compared to the flood in November, the situation can become worse if there are strong winds, big waves and heavy rains at the same time.

These conditions will cause flash floods, seawater overflow and coastal flooding.

The risky areas are:

  • Kedah – Kuala Muda
  • Perak – Bagan Datoh
  • Selangor – Klang, Kuala Langat, Sabak Bernam, Kuala Selangor
  • Johor – Batu Pahat, Pontian

Beachgoers are advised to be cautious while doing water and recreational activities on those dates.

MKN added that the people must be vigilant about weather changes and be ready to move to a safer place if there’s heavy rain and rising tides.
