A recent tweet by @dckahc showed a circular allegedly sent by the Ministry of Education (MOE) telling all state education departments and district education offices to stop period spot checks in school.

Based on the image posted on Twitter, the circular dated 2 November is apparently posted in a private Facebook group called Kami Guru Malaysia.

In the circular, the ministry said it’s taking the issue of menstruation-related spot checks in schools under its purview seriously.

The ministry also mentioned that the institutions that are found guilty would face stern action immediately.

“The MOE emphasises that such a matter should not happen in any educational institution under the MOE,” the circular reads.

The ministry advised all state education departments and district education offices to be alert and carry out frequent checks in schools to prevent these issues from happening in the future.

So far, there is no official confirmation about this.

Previously, Education Minister Datuk Radzi Jidin visited a vocational college in Setapak after allegations that the female students were subjected to period spot checks.

This issue came to light when a whistleblower shared their experience with former journalist Tashny Sukumaran.

Sukumaran shared the incident on Twitter on 26 October, and the viral tweet brought forth many similar stories from students nationwide.

According to Says, the college in question is ERT Vocational College in Setapak. On 18 October, about 30 female students aged 18 and 19 were rounded up in the evening and were given cotton buds to prove they were menstruating.

The whistleblower told Sukumaran that the spot check practice has been going for a long time in the college.

When students pushed back against the invasion of privacy, they were told to pray if they were uncomfortable with the practice.

It was implied that the students were using menstruation as an excuse to skip prayers.
