Fans of the Evil Dead franchise may miss the slapstick comedy that has long been part of its identity, but Evil Dead Burn proves the fire is far from extinguished.
Directed and co-written by Sébastien Vaniček alongside Florent Bernard, the film is produced by franchise veterans Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi, who continue to expand the universe built around the infamous Necronomicon Ex-Mortis.
Vaniček delivers a twisted family drama wrapped in uncompromising horror, creating an experience that pushes even seasoned horror fans through its brutal imagery, relentless violence and disturbing atmosphere.
Those who missed 2023’s Evil Dead Rise will not be left confused, as Evil Dead Burn is not a direct sequel. Instead, it introduces a new story while keeping the franchise’s most recognisable element — the terrifying manipulation of the Deadites.
The film introduces Alice, who lost her husband in a car crash linked to the Deadites. Following his death, she attends a wake at her late husband’s family home, where tensions quickly emerge between her and her in-laws, Edgar and Susan.
While Alice struggles to find acceptance within the family, she finds comfort in her brother-in-law Joseph and his girlfriend Thya.
However, the fragile peace is shattered when Joseph discovers the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis and recites its infamous incantations — unleashing the nightmare that follows.
What comes next is a terrifyingly entertaining descent into blood, fear and more chaos than you can imagine.
This instalment may not reinvent the horror genre, but it understands exactly what its audience wants.
It is dark, it’s frightening and definitely savage. This is the the kind of horror experience fans of the series have come to expect.
