Despite centuries of scientific progress, some still hold onto the belief that fair skin is more beautiful and believe in myths that claim to lighten their skin tone. It gets disheartening when such biases extend to newborns, with some parents hoping to influence their baby’s natural skin tone.
A Threads user recently shared a tip, allegedly heard from a local public figure, that mothers can lighten their baby’s skin tone if they drink saffron daily.
Other claimed benefits of saffron during pregnancy include supporting the baby’s mental and physical development, replenishing the mother’s energy, alleviating morning sickness, strengthening bones for both mother and child, reducing jaundice, improving the mother’s skin complexion, and even enhancing the baby’s intelligence.

Some users urged her to take down the post, citing the spread of misinformation, while others encouraged parents to embrace and love their children regardless of skin tone.
A Threads user added that a child’s health is more important than the colour of their skin.
Can saffron lighten skin tone?
A baby’s skin tone, complexion, and facial features are determined by genetics and genes. External factors like food and drinks will not change anything.
Saffron may have some nutritional value, but it’s not a magic ingredient that can change or affect skin tone.
Saffron is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. This may explain why some report skin complexion improvements after consuming saffron, as these compounds help address underlying nutritional deficiencies.
The belief that saffron can lighten a baby’s skin tone is a longstanding myth. While some traditions recommend mixing saffron with milk to drink during pregnancy, there is no scientific evidence to support the claim either.
At most, both ingredients help address a mother and child’s nutritional deficiencies and will not help change the baby’s skin tone.
