Melur The Musical is an original local musical produced by the award-winning musical theatre company Liver & Lung, founded by Shafeeq Shajahan.

Known for their successful productions like Sepet The Musical and Mahsuri (And Other Peculiar Tales), Liver & Lung’s new production retells the harrowing story of the Pontianak: hell hath no fury like a Malayan woman scorned.

Brief Synopsis

Set in Colonial Malaya during the Malayan Emergency, the musical tells the story of two women, Melur (Tria Aziz) and Cempaka (Mila Mohsin) bound by friendship but separated by conflicting values. They may be close friends but their husbands on the other hand, are nemeses.

Cempaka’s husband, Sir Wilson is the British High Commissioner tasked with keeping Malayan order while Melur’s husband, Si Aman, is a Silat warrior involved in the anti-colonial movement. As both of them are conflicting in nature, Sir Wilson reigns terror on Si Aman and Melur, murdering them both.

After months have passed, Cempaka is blessed with a beautiful mixed raced daughter. Everything seemed fine until Wilson and Cempaka experience the wrath of a supernatural being, Melur, now a scorned Pontianak, haunting the family for revenge.

An original production

According to FMT, the director, writer, and co-composer, Shafeeq Shajahan is always fascinated by Malaysia’s obsession with the supernatural.

“I always think a country’s preference about what makes them scared tells us a lot about what that country is like,” he said.

To make this production, Shafeeq was inspired by the strong women in his family and in the country who braved difficult times. He also sees the Pontianak as a symbol of proto-feminism.

“Although there are moments that are very scary in the show, the real horror is about how women were treated,” he added.

If you love horror films and Malaysian history, don’t miss out on this spine-chilling show next week.
