Malaysian Paper Cutting Artist’s Artwork Featured In Netflix’s 2023 Lunar New Year Collection

Eten Teo, a Malaysian paper cutting artist, has created an intricate piece of art highlighting a family’s Chinese New Year Celebration, special for Netflix.
His piece marks the first time a physical artwork is digitalised and featured on a local moment on Netflix.
You can see his artwork in Netflix’s special Lunar New Year collection, where a specially-curated collection of CNY themed movies, shows, series are gathered all in one page.
Not only is his artwork featured in Netflix Malaysia, but it is also highlighted on the Netflix platform in Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Vietnam.
The physical artwork took Teo a week to complete and revolves around the word 福 (fú, meaning “fortune” or “good luck”). It is meant to represent the blessings and happiness surrounding the festivities.
If you can spot the artwork clearly, you can see familiar CNY celebration scenes like mum trying to balance her tray as she tries to stop the lion kitty from lunging at the TV, grandma giving out ang paos, children writing couplets while watching their favourite show on Netflix and more.
Eten Teo puts some of his fondest memories of celebrating CNY with his family as a child in his latest artwork, which makes it extra special.
Every CNY, the adults at home will be busy with the required preparations, and children will write couplets to decorate the home. As a child, I was the one helping to decorate and arrange the decorations. Although my family can be a bit chaotic, it is actually a very warm scene. Getting together for the new year is a very happy occasion for me.
