Dancers At Large is a studio performance of Odissi by the nine young female dancers from the Sutra Dance Outreach Program.

Odissi dance is a dance form from the state of Odisha in eastern coastal India. Also referred to as Orissa in old literature, it is recognised as one of the eight classical dance forms of India.

The dancers will be testing their capacity as dancers to the maximum by presenting a challenging repertoire consisting of complex movements and rhythmic patterns of the Odissi dance. Witness their graceful and meticulous dance moves this weekend at the House of Sutra.

Besides that, they will also share their journey and experience as dancers of the Sutra Dance Outreach Program which was created by the one and only, Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, one of the most accomplished Indian classical dancers and choreographers in the world.

The Sutra Dance Outreach Program is a program to different opportunities for children and teenagers (ages six to fifteen) to benefit from formal training in dance. The students are chosen from areas outside of Kuala Lumpur like Kajang, Rawang, Ladang Sungai Choh and Kuala Selangor.

The young dancers now represent the next generation of Sutra dancers.  They, who were once ungainly caterpillars, have metamorphosized into butterflies; gawky ducklings have finally turned into swans.

We now can see an awareness, confidence and empowerment as the dancers are acknowledged for their hard work and accomplishment.

Presently, several of these young dancers have started to perform with Sutra senior dancers in our overseas performances and have received favourable reviews, internationally.
