Agriculture or farming is the bedrock of our human civilization. The ability to cultivate plants and livestock for food and resources has historically enabled us to build empires across the world.
But nowadays, agriculture is often regarded as a ‘dirty’ industry that’s far detached from the comforts of modern life. And as the world continues to face shortages from the climate crisis and other factors, it becomes crucial for us everyday folks to be more attuned to how we produce the things we need to survive.
Well, the Agroculture Axcelerator Program or AGREX endeavours to change Malaysia’s attitude towards farming.
Made in collaboration between MARDI Corporation and Boxcube Travellers, AGREX is a program designed to grow interest in agriculture by providing the public, especially youths, with knowledge and first-hand experiences about farming in a fun and interactive way.
Promoting what they call ‘Agro-Culture’ AGREX wants everyone to have a sensitive and caring attitude toward the agricultural sector and how we essentially grow and produce our groceries and supplies.
AGREX will take participants on field trips around the country to learn and observe agriculture in action and have interactive sessions with professional trainers and educators from MARDI and other research institutions.
The program will involve interactions with real-world agriculture practices and experts, as well as content focused on areas like food security, biodiversity, sustainability and environmental science.
The program also includes digital learning tools for participants to share their individual learning experiences with others in a peer-to-peer learning environment. Members of the public can also sign up as coaches to train participants in the program.
MARDI Corporation Head of Technology and Expertise Management Faizal Ramli simplified the AGREX program as an ‘educational holiday’ experience where participants get to travel and learn about the ins and outs of farming at the same time.
We came up with the idea to merge education, agro and tourism. The program will provide full agriculture training. We’ll teach and show you the agricultural, economics and manufacturing processes. At the end of the program, we’ll give you a certificate.MARDI Corporation Head of Technology and Expertise Management Faizal Ramli
Faizal explains that the program also aims to reconnect Malaysians to our agro-cultural roots.
Agriculture is endemic to Malaysian culture. So what AGREX wants to do is to bring back that culture. We want to bring the new generation back to agriculture, not just as potential careers but also for knowledge.MARDI Corporation Head of Technology and Expertise Management Faizal Ramli
Everyone can be farmers!
Boxcube Travellers Founder and Managing Director Eli Ken relates AGREX to a ‘summer camp’ where people of all ages can enjoy and learn from.
Instead of just normal travel, there’s so much to cover about this topic since it concerns things like food security and sustainability. We feel that this is an important thing for everyone to engage with.Boxcube Travellers Founder and Managing Director Eli Ken
Eli explains that AGREX wants to seed the mindset that everyone can become farmers and embrace sustainable agricultural practices, even from the comforts of their modern homes, with the right know-how.
We can be agro-culture adopters and practice this in a modern setting. Doesn’t mean we have to go back to kampung you know.Boxcube Travellers Founder and Managing Director Eli Ken
