As homeowners, using energy efficiently is essential to help you save money and energy, protect the environment, and enhance your lifestyle.

But what consumes the most electricity in a house?

For most Malaysians, the answer is air conditioning because of the country’s hot, humid climate.

According to research, the energy demand created by this appliance constitutes up to 50% of energy use in a home, and 20% of energy use in the residential sector.

How Much Horsepower (HP) Is Needed?

The basic rule of thumb is the bigger the room is, the higher the cooling capacity is required.

Another factor to consider is the amount of heat exposure the room has during the day.

If the room has direct sunlight, it might need a bigger HP to bring the temperature down

A Twitter user, @aaizatnizam, shares how to choose the appropriate air conditioner capacity.

Normally, 1.0hp should be sufficient for a standard room and 1.5hp for a standard size living hall for apartments or landed terraced houses.

If your house is heavily shaded, you may reduce the capacity by 10%.

Inverter AC Better Than Non-Inverter

Inverter aircon is inherently more energy-efficient and will help you save on your monthly bills.

Also, because of this energy-efficient feature, the inverter aircon is regarded as an environmentally-friendly system as it uses 30-50% less energy than a non-inverter type.

Once a room is cool, inverter air conditioners lower the speed of the compressor motor to save energy and refrigerant required to cool the air.

In comparison, non-inverter motors only run at full speed and then shut off when the room temperature reaches the desired temperature.

Energy Efficiency Label

In Malaysia, we have 5-star energy appliances that are certified by the EnergyCommission of Malaysia.

Products that have a 5-star label help you save energy and money without sacrificing performance.

By using less energy, these products also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

All manufacturers and importers of the following products: television, refrigerator, domestic fan, air conditioner, and washing machines must affix the Energy Efficiency Label onto the products before they can be sold to the customer. (Source: Energy Commission)

In this regard, the government has launched the Sustainability Achieved Via Energy Efficiency (SAVE) 3.0.

The program grants a maximum of RM400 e-Rebate to domestic households for using energy-efficient electrical appliances.

That said, consumers can do something on their own to improve their electricity bills instead of hoping that TNB would not increase its tariff.

Cheapest Time To Use Electricity

Electricity is often cheaper late at night or early in the morning, so those will be the times when you can save money on your electric bill.

This is because these are typical off-peak hours when not as many people are using electricity.

The peak period means the period between 0800 hours and 2200 hours. The off-peak period means the period between 2200 hours and 0800 hours.

There are also different tariff rates for different categories, so check it out and be informed.
