Malaysia is home to the beautiful craft of handweaving, a skill that is rich in culture and heritage. Although we may know vaguely of the handwoven craft, it is often seen as just traditional attire.
Now, however, the craft is getting the spotlight it deserves: with its own fashion show.
TENUN Fashion Week
The TENUN Fashion Week celebrates the art of handweaves by weaving communities in Southeast Asia and reimagines their continued relevance by exploring their use in modern fashion.
This first-of-its-kind show featured spectacular fabrics and stories from all over Southeast Asia, with 45 participating weaving communities making their debut from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
By using fashion to shine a light on the intricacies of the textile traditions, it is our hope that this helps sustain the region’s weaving communities and preserve its rich cultural heritage.
Maybank Chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa
Not only were the weaves displayed, but TENUN also highlighted the craftspeople and communities behind the unique textile art.
Hand-woven textiles are the core of our culture. We need to support our traditional hand weaves because without them, an important part of our people will be lost. The hand weaving industry is a big part of our cultural export. It has the power to feed families, sustain communities and contribute to the national economy.
Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri
TENUN also had panel discussions, story sessions, and even a fireside chat session with a master weaver herself.
A Great Show Made Free
The 3-day show proved to be a treat for anyone interested in art, fashion, fabric, and the stunningly rich heritage of Southeast Asia. But the best part: the whole show is made FREE to watch anytime, anywhere.
The whole session was streamed live online on the TENUN Fashion Week YouTube channel, covering all three days of beautiful fabrics and amazing story-telling.
