McDonald’s Malaysia may motivate us to work (out) hard to enjoy their food, but they are also motivators to celebrate the everyday heroes in our lives – teachers.
In celebration of Teacher’s Day (Hari Guru) held on 16 May 2021, McDonald’s launched its 5th annual Anugerah Guru Inspirasi McDonald’s (AIG), an award recognising extraordinary teachers across Malaysia who have inspired and shaped those around them to be the best version of themselves.
Over 4,000 submissions were made between 2 – 18 April, with over 17,000 submissions of more than 81 notable teachers since AIG began in 2017.
Personal, raw, and filled with genuine affection
An overview of the submitted entries include how teachers have adapted to online learning while working around the clock to prepare materials to make sure no student is left behind during remote learning.
The stories were also about how teachers have created trust with students who were not motivated to learn in the initial stages, but because of their patience and perseverance, helped them reach their fullest potential.
Of the 4,000 nominations received this year, 25 have been selected. The winners, along with the stories by their nominees as to why they deserve this award, can be found here.

Winners of the award were selected by a panel of judges consisting of representatives from McDonald’s, Ministry of Education (MoE) and media.
The winning 25 teachers received a cash prize worth RM5,000 while Malaysians who submitted the winning nominations will also receive RM200 worth of McDonald’s gift vouchers as a token of appreciation.
These teachers aren’t the only ones recognised for times they’ve gone above and beyond with their craft. A locally-driven #TikTokGuru hashtag has sparked a growth in traction with videos created by educators who want to share their knowledge and make learning fun.
