[UPDATE: UMMC has since responded with a press statement, stating that the medical center has welcomed all forms of contribution since the very beginning of the pandemic. Lazada Malaysia contributed as well by providing a platform to implement donation drive programs. UMMC will use such contributions to manage and handle the Covid-19 pandemic, and they are grateful and appreciative of all contributions and support by all parties.]

Recently, some netizens have come across what looks like a donation page to University Malaya Medical Center (UMMC) on Lazada.

The Lazada page admits donations starting from RM50.

The listings feature an image of fronliners clad in PPE, costing from RM50 to RM500.

In the age of online scams, we’re all skeptics

Many netizens were extremely quick to voice their doubts about the legitimacy of the donations. In this time where online scams are everywhere, most Malaysians preferred to err on the side of caution, especially when the “merchant” was listed as Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaysia (the correct name is Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya). Later, the merchant name was changed to reflect the correct name.

Shockingly, the donation page is legit

However, UMMC came out to announce on their official social media page today that the donation page on Lazada is indeed legitimate, and they are actually asking for donations from the public.

They’re not the only ones

Even more shockingly, UMMC is not the only organization that is asking for donations from the public on such e-commerce platforms.

Plenty of NGOs are listed on the platform, such as Mercy Malaysia, Unicef, Yayasan Malaysia, Malaysia Red Crescent Society, and more.

It seems that during this time, money is hard to come by for everyone- organizations included.
