With the global pandemic putting the importance of digital skills into sharper focus, the recently held Asean Data Science Explorers (ASEAN DSE) National Finals proved that Malaysian youth certainly have what it takes with two Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) emerging as winners!

The Asean DSE is a regional programme organised by the ASEAN Foundation and SAP that aims to catalyse activism and critical thinking among university students, while equipping youths with future-ready skills that will enable them to thrive in the “New Normal” era.

Demonstrating impressive critical thinking, UTM students Oscar Fang Jack Ling and Quah Chun Meng, together as Team Psyduck, proved to be a winning duo with their project focused on digital integration.

They were also joined by Mohd Fahad Saleem and Viknesa Vetrivelan from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Imperium International College at second place, as well as Nikola Adiprasetya and How Jo Yi from Sunway University and Monash University Malaysia finishing in third.

According to ASEAN DSE, the three winners were judged based on their ability to design a best all-rounded concept that tackles ASEAN socio-economic issues, driven by data insights. The judging criteria also looked at the creativity, feasibility, innovation, and the team’s ability to demonstrate the solution’s implementation.

With this triumphant win, the Oscar and Quah will present their impressive project at the upcoming Asean DSE Regional Finals where they will compete with other national winners, including competitors from Singapore and Indonesia as well.

The two certainly face stiff competition as a total of 852 youths across the region competed to represent their country in the National Finals, but we have faith in them!

Congratulations to the winners!
