Maisarah Hannan, a guidance and counselling teacher at SMK Convent St Cecilia, Sabah, started a free meal programme for students who were less fortunate and came to school on an empty stomach.
She has been keeping the programme ongoing since March 2018. Together with fellow teachers who have also contributed to the cause, she believes that no student should go hungry. When she began the programme, she initially contributed 15 to 20 packs of food a day. Now, she provides up to 50 packs of food.
On Tuesday, she posted some pictures on Facebook of students eating nasi lemak on the first day of the schools’ reopening, which garnered widespread attention.
During the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO), she has delivered fresh groceries and meat to a less fortunate family so they wouldn’t have to eat instant noodles, prepared care packages full of cold drinks and ice cream to frontline officers, and even gave out free plants for anyone who wanted some.
She has a good rapport with students and are privvy to her students’ struggles, financially or emotional, due to her position as the school counsellor. With the families permission, she strives to help them in any way possible, even if it’s providing for basic necessities such as packs of rice or eggs.
Maisarah Hannan is well-loved and celebrated in her community for her acts of generosity and her deep care for students. Thank you cikgu, for all the good you bring to your community!
