Three Malaysian Women Win UK-Based SEA Awards For Remarkable Work In Science, Arts & Social Work

Three remarkable Malaysians made the nation proud at the 2020 Women Of The Future Southeast Asia Awards when they emerged victorious in three separate categories.
Social worker Heidy Quah of Refuge For The Refugees, scientist Dr Chew Bee Lynn from Universiti Sains Malaysia and professional photographer Annice Lyn of Anntopia each were declared winners of the Community Spirit & Public Service, Science, Technology & Digital and Arts & Culture categories respectively.
The three amazing women were among 10 Southeast Asian figures who were named winners at the regional awards ceremony aimed at providing a platform to showcase regional emerging leaders.Â
The Women Of The Future Award was actually established in 2006 in the United Kingdom and began honouring outstanding Southeast Asian women from various fields in 2018.
While the awards ceremony is usually held in a grand fashion worthy of the women being honoured, the Covid-19 pandemic switched things up and it was held online for the first time last night (25th June).
However, the excitement was no less exuberant as the winners watched their names flash across the screen.
Meet the amazing Malaysian winners
Heidy Quah, Director & Founder of Refuge For The Refugees

For her stellar work in running a non-profit organisation (NGO)Â that raises awareness of the plight of refugees in Malaysia and provides education for refugee children, Heidy Quah was named Community Spirit & Public Service Award Winner.
Refuge For The Refugees currently supports 35 refugee schools, two halfway homes and a refugee vocational training school in Malaysia and Myanmar.
Heidy founded the NGO in 2012 when she was just 18 years old.
Dr Chew Bee Lynn, researcher at USM

The Science,Technology & Digital Award Winner Dr Chew Bee Lyn is an academician and researcher at Universiti Sains Malaysia who specialises in plant tissue culture.
This means that the intelligent scientist works with local growers to introduce practical agricultural technologies which includes the production of high-quality fruit plant stocks.
Her ultimate goal is to merge plant science with modern farming techniques to produce quality plants that are affordable and nutritious for the Malaysian diet.

Annice Lyn is probably most known for being the only accredited female Malaysian photographer for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, North Korea.
But her accolades and expertise doesn’t just stop there.
The former national competitive figure skater was also the Chief Photographer for the Malaysian figure skating team, she covered the 2018 Malaysian General Elections and had her work featured in international campaigns, news and agencies such as Samsung, Getty, Associated Press and Forbes.
With all these impressive achievements under her belt, it’s no wonder that Annice was declared the Arts & Culture Winner.
