Orkestra RTM has brought 15 musicians together to record an amazing performance, separately, from the comfort of each of their own homes.

The orchestra team for RTM are the first ones in the country to take on the impressive feat, of which was dedicated to all the Malaysian men and women working tirelessly at the frontlines against the Covid-19 pandemic.

The song they chose to perform was Bahtera Merdeka, composed by the late Kassim Masdor.

Speaking of the performance, RTM Music Director Datuk Mokhzani Ismail said that the idea to take on such a challenge was inspired by similar performances done by musicians overseas. Though, he admitted that it was not an easy endeavour.

Aside from bringing the musicians together, at their own separate homes, the team also needed to ensure the song was played in tune and in tempo. At the same time, it needed to be recorded and we needed to keep an eye on the music score too.

Mokhzani also shared that they will be working on getting an acknowledgement of their feat from the Malaysia Book of Records and that they intend to record another similar performance soon, but possibly on an even larger scale.

On the choice of song, Mokhzani explained that the score was suitable for the challenge faced by Malaysians in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and implementation of the movement control order.

Bahtera Merdeka was originally sung by the late Datuk Ahmad Jais and remade by Aishah. The lyrics contain the phrase “jiwa dan raga, buktikanlah pada nusa dan bangsa”. I believe these words perfectly encapsulate what we’re going through.

The phrase mentioned by Mokhzani means “soul and body, prove it to the country and nation” and he said that the performance is dedicated to the Malaysians who are fighting for the country at the frontlines.

The amazing performance was arranged by Aziem Rashidi and conducted by Luqman Aziz.
