Malaysians working in Singapore express that they have never experienced a situation quite like right now.
Being away from family for days but having to maintain composure and continue working as if everything is normal.
Thousands of Malaysians have opted to remain in Singapore after the Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced a nationwide Movement Control Order (MCO) effective from 18 to 31 March 2020, aimed to contain the further spread of COVID-19.
Some Singaporean employers, aware that a number of their staff commute daily from Johor to Singapore for work, gave their employees the option to not come to work during the MCO. Others provide hotel accommodation for their Malaysian staff to stay at since they can’t go home.
Although given the option to not work, for some Malaysians the prospect of having their income affected for two weeks, maybe even more, is unacceptable.
So, they keep calm, obey the order and hope that soon they will be reunited with their families in Malaysia.
Thankfully, through an agreement between the two governments, Singapore will provide accommodation to Malaysians who commute between the two countries for work for the two-week period while the MCO is in force.
The Singapore Ministry of Human Resources has also reportedly been channelling S$50 per day accommodation aid to all affected Malaysians, through their Singapore employers.
