Don’t Forget To Protect Your Pets From Fireworks
Those who suffer the most during New Year’s Eve are actually pets. Dogs and cats get scared when fireworks light up the sky and cause loud explosions. This can cause them to run away from home and get lost or wreak havoc indoors.
Think about it: the loud noise and unpredictability and flashes of light would scare you too if you didn’t know what was going on.
But it’s particularly bad for pets. Fireworks can cause:
• seizures
• shocks
• loss of hearing
• tinnitus
• PTSD
• runaway pets
• injuries from trying to “escape” the noise
You may think that it’s not a big deal, but your pets have a chance of suffering long-term damage.
Instead, here’s what you should do to protect your furkids:
• Keep pets indoors before the fireworks
• Draw curtains to keep out the flashes of light
• Drown out the noise by playing Netflix or TV
• Let them hide in their favourite “safe space”
• Give them their favourite toy or blanket to feel comfortable with
• Be at home with them physically
• Show them that you are calm and unaffected
• Be gentle with them, even if they pee the place or turn destructive
• Distract them with treats if they are up for it
The idea is basically to communicate with your pet that the loud sounds and flashing lights are not a threat. And if they are scared, be a source of comfort and safety for them while you wait out the fireworks.
But if you’re going out to enjoy a New Year’s Eve party, don’t forget your furkids waiting for you at home, and make sure they will be comfortable even without you.
