5 Great M’sian Charities To Volunteer & Make A Difference

Although we might believe that one person alone can’t change the world, in reality, the smallest act of kindness can truly make a difference.

Regardless of whether it’s helping refugees, the homeless, even the environment, there are countless ways and organisations that you can join in and help the world become a better place.

December 5 is World Volunteer Day, so why not try and volunteer in one of these great organisations:

1. Fugee.org

Fugee.org is the brainchild of former Miss Malaysia, Deborah Henry to empower refugee kids by providing them holistic education and access to tertiary and vocational opportunities.

They provide a platform for refugees to develop their business and creative skills, learn about sustainable practices and enjoy hands-on employment opportunities.

The organisation also has entrepreneurship and protection programmes, as well as supporting refugee-led initiatives.

2. Institut Onn Ja’afar

Institut Onn Ja’afar provides temporary relief to the underprivileged by mobilising volunteers from private and public institutions irrespective of ethnic, religious or social backgrounds.

They have multiple campaigns to help the needy including providing breakfast to underprivileged children and homeless people in Chow Kit and partnering with another NGO, Buku Jalanan Chow Kit to set up night tuition classes to underprivileged children on Friday nights.

3. SPCA

Do you love animals? Why not try to volunteer at SPCA!

There are many volunteer duties at their centre including the morning sessions of cleaning, helping to prepare and serve meals to the animals, kennel guides (assisting the public when choosing an animal), socialising with the animals, and general housekeeping duties.

Experienced dog handlers can also assist with walking, bathing and grooming the dogs.

Those aged 11 years and below must be accompanied by a parent, teacher or guardian above 18 years of age.

4. The Kalsom Movement

Kalsom Movement is an independent and voluntary student-led charity which specialises in tackling education inequality in Malaysia.

Since it was established in 1994, the movement has helped more than 4,000 beneficiaries via its numerous initiatives and programmes.

They focus on developing Malaysia’s future leaders by empowering university students to share their knowledge and skills to help younger economically-disadvantaged Malaysian students achieve their ambitions.

5. Global Environmental Centre

Here’s an organisation for those who are genuinely concerned with the environment.

Global Environment Centre (GEC) is for those who are willing to contribute their time and effort for environmental conservation.

They have activities such as the River Care Programme which focuses on promoting community participation in the river and water resource protection and sustainable use through the Civic Science approach.
