Study: People who walk slow will probably die faster

It’s pretty common knowledge that walking for at least 30 minutes a day is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health. But did you know that speeding up your steps might actually help you live longer?

A study published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings journal last month looked at how physical fitness associates to one’s lifespan and overall health compared to their BMI (body mass index).
The researchers recorded self-reported walking speeds and BMIs of almost 475,000 participants and followed them for about seven years. During this period, there were around 12,800 deaths.
The results showed that despite the participants BMI, if they were fast walkers, their likelihood for an early death was reduced.
The study revealed that brisk-walking women lived up to 88 years old while brisk-walking men lived up to 87 years old.
Compared to slow-walking women who had a life expectancy of 72 to 85 years old and slow-walking men who had a life expectancy of 65 to 81 years old.
In fact, not only did they find that fast walkers live longer, they also found that the faster you walk, the longer you live.
Women who walked faster than 4 mph (~6.4 km/h) could enjoy a 15 year long life expectancy boost than those who walked less than 3 mph (~4.8 km/h). For men, the life expectancy boost could be up to 20 years. Like this we run everywhere je la…
Well, we don’t know about you guys but we’re gonna put our shoes on and get walking!
