Yang-di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong will wear fabric made by prisoners for Coronation

Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah has bestowed her grace by inviting the prisoners of Penor and Bentong Prison to partake in next month’s 16th Agong Coronation.

Over 100 prisoners have been hard at work producing an exclusively designed Royal Pahang Woven Fabric or in Malay, Kain Tenung Pahang Di Raja.

Our Raja Permaisuri Agong was so excited about these textiles that she even Tweeted about the royal weaves.

The Royal Pahang Woven Fabric, a national heritage that dates back more than 300 years, has been chosen to be the fabric of choice for the coronation of Yang-di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong.

Tunku Azizah feels that it is a sign of respect from both herself and the prisoners to be wearing such a delicate piece of handcraft for the Royal Installation.

The fabrics were personally designed by Tunku Azizah herself. She was inspired by nature, especially coffee beans and shadows of fences.

Yesterday at the Istana Negara, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah received the bales of cloth from prison representatives.

The prisons were represented by Prisons Director-General Datuk Seri Zulkifli Omar and the Pahang Prisons Director Datuk Ab Basir Mohamad.

In total, 4 sets of suits each, will be made for the coronation of Yang-di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong. After careful evaluation of the textile’s quality, Tunku Azizah will pay a fair amount of wage to the prisoners that helped make this project an accomplished one.
