In Brief

Most fit or athletic people test their endurance through gruelling physical activities like running interstate marathons or high-repetition weightlifting at the gym, but there’s another test of endurance that involves two wheels and higher risks.

As long as you have a motorcycle, anyone can take on the Iron Butt Challenge, an extreme long-distance endurance ride certified by US-based Iron But Association (IBA).

The IBA is a global organisation dedicated to safe, long-distance riding, and to become an official member, riders must successfully document and complete one of the entry-level benchmark rides.

Can Malaysians take on the challenge?

Although the association is based in America, the challenge is open to riders all around the world. So yes, Malaysians can put themselves to the test no matter where they are to see if they have an Iron Butt.

All you need to do is plan your route, get on your bike, and go on that trip.

The IBA official website provides a helpful list of long distance riding tips which they call “The Archive of Wisdom”, which claims to contain the collective knowledge and wisdom of some of the most experienced, seasoned long-distance riders in the world.

Beyond that, the site also holds information on all the different ride certifications, Iron Butt Rally reports from 1984 to 2023, and a forum for those who have questions about the challenge.

What are the rules?

Riders can choose to complete one, multiple, or all Iron Butt challenges. However, many of the certificates are tailored for locations in the US. For Malaysians, the suitable challenges to try are:

Saddlesore 1600K

Step 1: Ride 1,600 kilometres in less than 24 hours. Plan a safe route using mapping app like Google Maps and check if the route really is 1,600km.

Step 2: Collect, photograph, and track, fuel receipts; the start and end of each stop; and photos of each receipt in front of your bike odometer. Remember to also keep a log of each stop.

Step 3: Submit all your trip documentation to IBA.

Bun Burner 2500K

Step 1: Ride 2,500 kilometres in less than 36 hours. Plan a safe route using mapping app like Google Maps and check if the route really is 2,500km.

Step 2: Collect, photograph, and track, fuel receipts; the start and end of each stop; and photos of each receipt in front of your bike odometer. Remember to also keep a log of each stop.

Step 3: Submit all your trip documentation to IBA.

According to the IBA, you can complete both challenges in the same ride and claim the certifications for Saddlesore 1000K and Bun Burner 2500K in one go.

Why take on the Iron Butt Challenge?

The Iron Butt challenge is taken more as a personal challenge (and maybe some bragging rights to your motorcycle group).

Malaysian bikers are always looking for bigger and better ways to test their riding skills and endurance, and doing the Iron Butt is an easy and no-frills way of doing it.

Joe Choong, a Selangor-based rider and motorcycle content creator who recently completed the Saddlesore 1600K challenge, told TRP that his main advice for those taking on the Iron Butt challenge is to always stay well hydrated.

Riding in Malaysia also provides unique challenges. Joe said that while riding through a part of his route through Gerik, Perak, he encountered an elephant. While his experience was a pleasant one, riders should always be careful not to provoke the animal.

“I’m also quite fortunate to be able to own and ride one of the most comfortable motorcycles ever made, which made the challenge a lot easier. So now I’m looking to do the Bun Burner 2500K,” said Joe, who rides a BMW 1250 GS adventure motorcycle with ten years of experience.

Think of the Iron Butt as a “marathon” for motorcyclists. Perhaps the real value of completing the challenge is the things you learn along the way: how to manage time, energy, fuel consumption, safety habits, and knowing your own riding limits.

If you’re taking on the Iron Butt challenge, good luck and be sure to ride safe!
