Are you a cat person and a beach person? Well we have something to tell you.
Over on Penang Island, there is a beach dominated by felines. That’s right, this beach is the perfect getaway spot for those who want to get some sun, go swimming, and hang out with some furry friends.
This magical place is called Cat Beach Sanctuary, located at Teluk Bahang along the northern part of the island.
Speaking to its co-founder, Prof. Teviot Fairservis, the sanctuary is home to around 350 cats currently, all of which are cared for by her and volunteers. Cat Beach Sanctuary began in 2014, and was inspired by the Penang Animal Welfare Society (4PAWS) which focuses on dog welfare and adoption.
“There is such a place for dogs so I thought why not we have one for cats?” Fairservis told TRP.
She explained that Cat Beach Sanctuary’s main goals are:
- To give rescue cats a sanctuary where they will have a second chance at life with the best possible love and care at international standards.
- To be an education center providing information about cat care and animal welfare, a non-profit shelter and management, and provide community service while offering training and volunteer opportunities.
- To offer a unique tourist attraction where visitors and volunteers can experience the joy of being with cats.
All cat or animal lovers are welcome, whether to just spend time with the cats or to volunteer
Cat Beach Sanctuary is open to all who love cats or animals in general, and are encouraged to adopt a cat they see on the beach that they like (or a cat that likes them!).
Fairservis said they run all sorts of adoption programmes to help anyone who wishes to bring a cat home and be part of their family.
At the same time, they are also open to having volunteers to come and help with the cats, including feeding them, cleaning their spaces, groom them, give them the fun and attention they need, and anything else the shelter might need assistance with.
If you’re just there to hang out with the cats, that’s fine too!

Taking care of more than 300 cats is no easy task
Fairservis explained that much needed donations would be a big help in taking care of the 350 cats that reside at Cat Beach Sanctuary.
Admission can be through donations of cat food, cat care items, cat toys, cleaning suppplies, or a cash donation of RM10 to help meet their monthly expenses of RM30,000.
Adopting a cat will come at no cost, but a fee to deliver the cat to a veterinarian and the vet’s expenses are to be borne by the adopter.
“Before we send a cat to its new home, we have it checked by a vet first to see if it requires any urgent medical attention. The cats we rescue may have injuries or trauma that need to be looked at first before they can settle in with their new family,” Fairservis said.

A Purrfect Christmas at Cat Beach Sanctuary
Cat Beach Sanctuary is hosting a special Christmas event this 20 and 21 December where attendees can meet the cats, take part in activities, and perhaps adopt a cat or two!
The event will have a Cats Christmas Market where you’ll find vendors selling cat art, DIY cat toys, and many more feline-related things.
They are also looking for more vendors at the moment so if you have something special to share with other cat lovers or even the cats themselves, get in touch with them at the Cat Beach Helpline.
So, if you’re on Penang Island this weekend and have a love for cats and the beach, swing by Cat Beach Sanctuary to meet their cats. And who knows, you might become a paw-rent yourself!
