As reported by The Korea Herald, Netflix introduced the new faces during Tudum, a global fan event that was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil last Saturday. They released a 1-minute and 45-second teaser worldwide, entailing the original characters and the new ones, without revealing the roles the characters play.

The first Korean actor to win an Emmy for lead actor in a drama series, Lee Jung-jae will continue to play the lead protagonist in the sequel. Meanwhile, Lee Byung-hun will return as the frontman, Wi Ha-joon will return as the undercover police officer and Gong Yoo, will return to reprise his role as the mysterious recruiter.

Apart from the original cast, 4 new male characters have been revealed which are Yim Si-wan (Unlocked), Kang Ha-neul (When Camelia Blooms), Park Sung-hoon (The Glory) and Yang Dong-geun (Yaksha: Ruthless Operations).

So no women?

However, fans worldwide were puzzled as the new line of cast didn’t even have a female character. Some even say that the second one would flop if there isn’t any female roles.

Furthermore, besides the show winning multiple awards for the main lead actor, the female actress who played a skilled pickpocket fighting to earn money for her little brother, Jung Ho-yeon even won an award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series from the Screen Actors Guild Award. And she didn’t just win one, she also won and was nominated for lots of awards too, along with her female co-star, Lee You-mi.

So airing a sequel for Squid Game without any female leads would definitely be something fans just cannot accept.

Addressing the criticism, Netflix Korea gave a statement to Insider, clarifying that more casting news is on the way.

“This was the first cast announcement for Squid Game season two. We’re excited to share more casting news soon, which will include the leading female characters,” the streamer said.

They also added that shootings for the sequel will begin in the second half of this year.

So don’t worry everyone, it’s just a part of their marketing. Let’s hope they’ll introduce the female characters soon enough.

Squid Game became Netflix’s number 1 all-time show with 1.65 billion hours streamed by subscribers worldwide in 28 days following its 17 September premiere in 2021. Over 111 million fans watched the show globally.

Squid Game is a nine-episode series that revolves around a secret and deadly contest where 456 players who are all struggling financially, risk their lives to play a series of deadly children’s games for a chance to win 45.6 billion won.
