Over the years, gifted musicians have been capturing souls worldwide and getting to witness them perform live is an experience of a lifetime.

Such a magical evening happened last Sunday at the Arena Of Stars in Genting Highlands when the arena’s walls echoed with the immersive performance of Kenneth Bruce Gorelick also known as Kenny G.

To those who had the opportunity to see the man himself up close, it was possibly the best moment of the evening.

The first three songs that he played was from his greatest hits – Loving You, Silhouette and G-Bop.

The crowd was immediately put under the spell of the melody from his saxophone. This continued through out his two-hour performance.

At one point of the concert, he showed his musical prowess by playing the instrument non-stop for about 5 to 6 minutes.

Kenny was not alone that night as he was backed by a talented band comprising of Robert Damper (piano), John Raymond (guitar), Daniel Benjarano (drums), Ronald Powell (percussion) and Vail Johnson (bass).

All of them had the opportunity to play a solo for the crowd and they did it phenomenally.

Powell in particular had the crowd tapping and clapping to his beats.

Kenny was not only focused on his saxophone but it was evident that he knew how to engage with the crowd. He took the trouble of learning a few phrases in Bahasa Malaysia and he did a good job in delivering them.

Saya tak bagus tetapi saya akan cuba……

Towards the end of the show, he even called a translator to thank the people who came to see him and enjoy his music.

In that conversation, he said that he has been playing the soprano saxophone for 50 years. He even joked that it was the longest relationship that he managed to maintain.

The last few songs he played included the famous classic by Teresa Teng, Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin (the moon represents my heart) and the popular folk song Mo Li Hua or Jasmine Flower.

The concert ended with his rendition of the Titanic and Encore which was the perfect ending for the evening.

Right after the concert, those who bought his album that day had the chance to get his autograph.

A concert with just music and no lyrics may sound weird but when it’s Kenny G, it turned out to be a soulful experience that one would never forget.
