Shazam! Fury of the Gods is packed with genuine fun and plenty of humour. The second Shazam instalment brings back the Shazamily (Shazam Family) and their kid-like sibling rivalries to life.
This time, they come face to face with the sister goddesses, collectively known as the Daughters of Atlas – Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu) and Anthea (Rachel Zegler).
What to expect?
The Shazam sequel tries to tackle the trappings of teenagehood such as love and relationships and the fear of growing up when you’re not yet ready.
As it goes, Billy Batson aka Shazam is growing out of the foster system soon. This means the likelihood of Billy moving out of the house and family he’s been living with.
Thus, it’s understandable why he’s clinging to his Shazam persona while his foster siblings are busy doing their own things. While he tries to rein them in and get everyone to work as a team, his siblings are making their own plans for the future.
His brother, Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer), finally meets a girl he likes and tries to impress her. Meanwhile, Billy’s older sister, Mary Bromfield, is focused on her studies.
The Daughters of Atlas were played wonderfully by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler.
The trio behaved like siblings with Hespera as the wiser older sister, Kalypso as the hot-headed middle sibling, and Anthea as the nicest youngest sibling.
Although the Daughters of Atlas are the villains to the Shazamily, I love how they’re also protagonists in their own way.
The sisters are trying to restore their home but the way they went about it took a turn for the worst.
The humour breaks come at the right moments to keep viewers hooked on the story right until the end.
Without revealing too much, the ending was an unexpected twist but I think it ties in well with the wider DCEU story.
Any gripes?
It’s understandable that it’s hard to give a huge cast equal screen time, especially in a second instalment.
However, I feel that characters such as Mary Bromfield (Grace Carline Currey) and Shazam/Wizard (Djimon Hounsou) could have used a longer screen time to let their characters do something more substantial.
Should you skip or watch it?
This Shazam sequel is a good reminder that comic book movies were always meant to be fun. While it didn’t have a groundbreaking plot, it was still an entertaining and delightful watch. And sometimes, that’s what we all need in cinemas.
If you’re looking for a breezy and fun family watch, Shazam! Fury of the Gods checks all the boxes.
Remember to stay back for the mid-credit and post-credit scenes.
