Once a year, the waters in Tanjung Rhu Beach, Langkawi, will lower just enough for visitors to walk on the sandbar to visit the other islands nearby.

According to Tanjung Rhu Resort, this phenomenon can be experienced by visitors during the Sandbar Walk event on 21 and 22 February between 6.45am and 7.30am.

The sea level at Tanjung Rhu Resort will drop to a maximum of 0.0 metres during this time to allow people to walk on the sandy path and explore the other islands.

Walking on the sandbar from Tanjung Rhu Beach will lead visitors to Pulau Kelam Baya. Visitors can even take a long walk to Pulau Cabang, an island that’s next to Pulau Kelam Baya.

It’s a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the various types of marine life on the different islands in Langkawi.

According to The Island Drum, the annual Sandbar Walk was said to be the brainchild of General Manager Reginald T. Pereira when he noticed the phenomenon during one of his property visits in 2019.

The resort decided to hold the event in 2020 and it was a great success with about 300 people showing up for the one-day event.

They managed to hold another event in 2021 despite the travel restrictions and it was estimated that about 500 people showed up.

If you’ve missed it this time round, you can still look out for the one next year! The announcement for the next Sandbar Walk will be announced by Tanjung Rhu Resort around December.
