Many of you have been wondering about the Chinese New Year Holidays, have you?

Why is my friend’s company getting Tuesday off and I’m not? Is Tuesday really a public holiday or is their office just making people take annual leave?

Basically, just like Hari Raya Aidilfitri, there are two public holiday days for the Chinese New Year in Malaysia. For this year, the first day of CNY is on Sunday and the second is Monday.

To illustrate what it means when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, we referred to the Selangor state circular on 2023 public holidays. If a public holiday falls on a rest day (Sunday), then the following day (Monday) becomes a public holiday.

However, if the next day is also a public holiday (in this case Monday is a public holiday for the second day of CNY), then the following day becomes a public holiday (Tuesday).

So for this year’s CNY, Sunday (rest day) is a public holiday, making Monday a public holiday. Since Monday is also another public holiday for CNY, its replacement will take place on Tuesday. However, Tuesday’s replacement does not apply to Kedah, Kelantan, Johor and Terengganu.

To confirm Tuesday is a public holiday, TRP made several calls. One was to a bank and another to a local council in Selangor. Both informed that they’d be closed for business until Tuesday, and will reopen on Wednesday.

Good luck to start work on Friday

For CNY, some companies will close their offices and offer the choice to their employees to take Annual Leaves. This year, it is believed that opening the office on Friday (27 January 2023) is good luck. So from Saturday to Thursday, they’ll close for business.

For Wednesday and Thursday, they’ll give choices for their employees to take Annual leaves because hey, the office will be closed one way or another. If you work remotely, you might not have to take the AL.
