Schools are back in session and parents have to once again coax their children into going back to classes.

Some preschool children will feel nervous and experience separation anxiety, which is a normal reaction. The children will usually get used to the new schedule once they spend time with their peers.

That said, there are also other children who might take longer to get used to a new environment that is not home. With some help from both parents and the teachers, these children will eventually be calmer and enjoy interacting with their friends.

Unfortunately, a parent shared her woes on Facebook when the teacher claimed that her 5-year-old’s constant crying and wailing in class always disturbed the whole class.

Sofia Hussien said her son had just attended school for 4 days when the teacher sent her a Whatsapp message to say her son kept crying and wasn’t interested to learn.

Sofia asked the teacher what she could do to help. The teacher said that Sofia should have taught her son how to be school-ready when he was around 3 or 4 years old.

The teacher suggested that Sofia could read to her son and teach him how to read at home to inspire his interest.

The teacher also voiced her worries that Sofia’s son wouldn’t be ready to go into Standard 1 next year seeing that he wasn’t ready to learn in a school environment.

In her Facebook post, Sofia said she was upset by what the teacher said and asked whether it’s normal for 5-year-old children to still cry in school.

She explained that she did try teaching her son at home in her own way. Sofia claimed that her son could write numbers 1 to 20 and recognize the letters of the alphabet, although sometimes the letters were written the other way round.

However, her son has not mastered reading yet unlike his peers. Sofia was at her wit’s end and asked others for input.

Is the teacher at fault?

Netizens blamed the teacher for not being able to manage a crying child in her class and said the teacher might need to go back for training.

Other parents assured Sofia that it’s normal for her 5-year-old son to cry in school because their children cried at the same age too.

They were surprised by what the teacher said because usually, teachers know that it’s normal for children to cry, especially if it’s the children’s first week in school.

Another parent suggested that Sofia change schools if the matter can’t be resolved. They said both the parents and the teachers should be working together to make school enjoyable for the children.

But perhaps there’s another problem

However, another netizen suggested Sofia check whether her son has a learning disability like dyslexia which might add to his nervousness and fear of school. It could explain why he had trouble mastering his reading ability too.

On another note, the pandemic lockdown messing up the schooling sessions are tough on younger children.

Some of the current children in preschool might not have had the luxury of time to get used to learning in a school and classroom environment.

Hopefully, Sofia’s son will be able to find a supportive learning environment and enjoy being in school soon.
