A video recently courted controversy when it went viral. The video showed a group of tutors from the popular tuition centre MC Plus being treated like Kpop idols.

Even one of the students could be seen jumping up and down excitedly as if she just caught a glimpse of her Kpop idol.

Videos showing the students welcoming the tutors like celebrities can be easily found in Tiktok under the hashtag #megatourmcplus

But that’s not even the weirdest thing. What’s strange and uncomfortable is that the students actually call some of the tutors ‘abah’ or ‘daddy.’

In contemporary terms, ‘daddy’ has sexual connotations. It’s usually used by a younger girl to address an older guy that they have a sexual interest in or sexual relations with.

Is it an innocent term?

When criticisms started trickling in, some MC Plus students defended the term and claimed that those who disagreed with them were sexualising an innocent term.

A few netizens pointed out that people are able to differentiate when the term is used in a sexual or non-sexual context.

They pointed how some students made a video edit of marrying their tutors too, implying that the term ‘abah’ or ‘daddy’ weren’t used in an innocent way at all.

Another netizen said the adults are supposed to be their teachers and not parents or friends.

That said, it’s not unheard of for some students to have a crush on their teachers but using calling their teachers ‘abah’ and ‘daddy’ definitely raises some eyebrows and it’s concerning.

Response from MC Plus

MC Plus has acknowledged the issue raised and said an investigation is underway. An official statement will be released soon too.

One of the tutors in question, Uzairi Taib, also issued an apology on his personal Twitter account.

He acknowledged that as an educator, he has to adhere to the code of ethics and apologized for his negligence.

He also announced his resignation to spare his colleagues from further harassment and to take full responsibility for the matter.

Some of the netizens, believed to be mostly MC Plus students, were sad to see him go.

A few asked him to stay and said he only needed to apologize.

Official statement from MC Plus

Based on an official statement made by MC Plus on Instagram Story, Cikgu Uzairi will be taking a month’s break from 9 December until 9 January 2022.

All of his classes and seminars will be taken over by the other tutors. MC Plus added that a new timetable will be released soon.
