A woman in Terengganu is the only Malaysian out of 43 people in the world who has a unique blood type known as the Rhnull (Rhesus null) blood type, also known as the Golden Blood.

According to Medical News Today, a Rhnull blood type is unique because the red blood cells do not have antigens on them, and thus, it’s the rarest blood in the world. In fact, it’s the rarest of them all.

The news was shared by Terengganu Kite Blood Donation on Facebook when the woman donated her blood.

The blood will be sent to the National Blood Centre in Kuala Lumpur to be frozen first. The rare blood will be stored in a nitrogen box at a temperature as low as -80 degrees Celcius for 10 years.

If there are patients who need this blood, the blood will be diluted for use.

To date, there are only nine active donors for this type of blood, and the woman from Terengganu is one of them.

Having a rare blood type is not all glamourous

Having a rare blood type comes with its own problems too. According to University of Melbourne, people with Rhnull blood type have abnormal red blood cells.

These red blood cells have deformed shapes, leaky membranes and shorter lifespans, which can result in mild anaemia for the individual.

Still, the Rhnull blood type does serve a purpose because it’ll help the other people with the same blood type in case of emergencies.
