We’re all about amazing feats achieved by Malaysian and this one adds to our list for inspiration.

In a social media post earlier this week, Foodpanda delivery rider Mohd Akmal wrote on the FoodPanda Rider Malaysia Facebook page “Alhamdulillah, finally finished my PhD after almost 4 years” followed by a collaged image of his achievement.

The post has since gone viral with over 6.7k likes, 600 comments and close to 1,000 shares.

His achievement certainly got the attention of media (TRP included) and mSTAR reports that it was Mohd Akmal’s discipline with time that made it all possible.

A 4-Year Journey

The father of five children took four years to earn his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in pharmaceutical technology from University Malaysia Pahang.

He went through the first three years of his studies fully funded, but during his final year, he needed a job to pay for his leftover student bills.

The 36-year-old said it was then that he started working as a delivery rider to help fund his education.

Luckily for him, his lab work and experiments had all been completed in the prior three years and the final year was to focus solely on writing his thesis.

He Made Time On His Side

One of the obstacles Mohd Akmal faced was making sure he’d stop doing deliveries till Maghrib prayers so he’d have time every night to work on his thesis.

Ultimately, he said it was his passion for knowledge that gave him the willpower to study and complete his studies.

A Ride Well Worth The Wait

Not only was Mohd Akmal learning a lot while earning his PhD, but he says he’s also learned a few skills as a delivery rider such as communication (with customers), patience and the importance of utilising time well.

For me what’s meaningful is the journey in getting that PhD — and the skills I’ve learned along the process. And to pray every day to ask God for guidance.
