Once a year, Malaysians across the country are welcomed by the brilliant bloom of the magnificent tabebuia rosea tree, also known as the tecoma or rosy trumpet tree – which flowers during the driest months of the year.
This “sakura” season, as its fashionably referred to by locals, shares much in common with the cherry blossoms of faraway Japan where tall shady trees burst into blooms of pink or white and carpets the ground with pleasant petals.
Scientifically referred to as the Tabebuia pentaphylla plant, the tecoma tree is said to originally be native to Central and South America, however, the plant is known to make its home in tropical climates all over the world.

Here in Malaysia, tecoma trees can be seen taking up real estate in public parks and fields as well as lining up the streets as ornamental plants.
Locals also give the plant the nickname “tissue paper tree” referring to the flowers thin petals.
Tecoma trees require a distinct dry season for them to bloom, which usually happens between the month of March and April. But the trees are also known to blossom any time the sun is abundant in the sky.
Take a stroll around your neighbourhood to see if there are any tecoma trees in bloom – like the ones we enjoyed near Taman TAR in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

For a more spectacular view of the tecoma in bloom, you can also make your way to witness the marvellous blossoms in Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Penang, Pahang, Melaka, Johor and Sabah like the ones that have gone viral on social media.
