They say that people come and go, but some friendships can last a lifetime.

Malaysians were swept away by a wave of melancholy when MYDIN – Malaysia’s largest halal hypermarket chain – bid a farewell to an “old friend” to send a warm “hello” to its new neighbor/competitor, Lotus’s Malaysia.

In a quick correspondence on Facebook, the two hypermarkets were seen exchanging greetings to one another following Tesco Malaysia’s rebrand to Lotus’s.

“Cheerio. Ol’ friend. Sawadee and a warm welcome to our new neighbour,” wrote MYDIN in its post complete with a digital gift basket to greet its new Thai counterpart.

In its reply, the Tesco Malaysia official page sent its own computer-generated basket of goodies with a poem to their new “kawan” in the market.

Netizens were seen taking to the comment section to send their own goodbyes and welcomed Lotus’s arrival.
