Every industry has their own way of acknowledging important achievements, and for the water industry, they have the Global Water Awards.
One of the awards is for Public Water Agency of the Year, to highlight the governmental agency or public body that made the biggest difference to water and wastewater service provision and utility management in 2019.
Air Selangor was shortlisted along with other national water companies; India’s Gujarat Water Infrastructure, Israel’s Mekorot, and Philippine’s National Water Company.
Highlighted among Air Selangor’s achievements was how they took over the entire state’s water supply in 2019, reversing decades of fragmentation, “smashing targets” for non-revenue water reduction and major replacement, and securing a revenue base with a rationalized tariff structure.
The Public Water Agency Of The Year Award
While Air Selangor’s announcement on their Facebook drew surprise from most Malaysians, Air Selangor did not actually win the Global Water Awards 2020.
The winner of Public Water Agency of 2020 was the National Water Company of Saudi Arabia, while Gujarat Water Infrastructure of India won Distinction.
Both Mekorot of Israel and Air Selangor of Malaysia came Highly Commended.
Still, Malaysians found it hard to believe that Air Selangor was commended for anything at all, as 2020 has been a particularly tough year for them with extremely frequent water cuts due to pollution issues.
While Selangor had suffered through numerous water cuts this year, most of it was due to outside sources of pollution.
Thus, as a precaution so that Malaysians do not use contaminated water, Air Selangor turns off the water supply while they deal with the pollution. After all, better a dry tap than toxic water, right?
