It came as a surprise to many people when Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah can croon out a tune in Cantonese flawlessly.
Recently, an old video clip resurfaced of Dr Noor Hisham singing the classic Cantopop song Shanghai Bund (Seung Hoi Tan) by Frances Yip, from the popular TV drama series The Bund from the 1980s.
In the clip, Dr Noor Hisham is seen wearing a suit and tie, looking like he’s about to tell us the next record-breaking number of new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia.
Instead, he croons out the song without even needing to look at the lyrics!
The video was filmed at the 67th session of the World Health Organization Regional Committee for the Western Pacific in Manila, Philippines in 2016.
Dr Noor Hisham was actually born to a Chinese family, and then adopted by a Malay ustaz. Later on, he changed his name to Noor Hisham Abullah when he got married. His early family history probably explains why he can croon out Cantopop songs so easily!
