Malaysia’s success and our Health Ministry’s response in handling the Covid-19 pandemic continues to receive praise from the global public health community. Especially towards Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah and his team.

Adding to the list of praises is one from Professor Julie Miller. Originally from the United States but based in Australia, she identified herself as a friend, colleague, and fellow endocrine surgeon to Dr Noor Hisham.

Malaysia is an example of what happens when leaders listen to science and the population complies and supports their leadership.

According to parathyroid.com.au, Julie is the President of Australia/New Zealand Endocrine Surgeons, and Head of the Endocrine Section of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. She is Head of the Thyroid and Endocrine Tumour Group of the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and directs the Thyroid Cancer Multidisciplinary Care Conference.

Julie took to social media to applaud Malaysia, Dr Noor Hisham, and the Malaysian public for coming together in breaking the infection chain of the Covid-19 virus and flattening out the country’s infection curve.

Julie opined that Dr Noor Hisham made hard decisions early when it came to dealing with the outbreak in Malaysia, even before the virus reached our shores.

She highlighted how Malaysia implemented strict border control, and vigorous testing, tracing, and isolation procedures to control the infection rate. She also spoke of the fact that the health ministry was open, clear, and consistent in relaying messages about the pandemic through daily press conferences, and implemented evidence and fact-based decision making.

Malaysia, a densely populated multicultural Asian country, has done very well, and Dr (Noor) Hisham is being hailed as a national hero. Science, not politics.

Julie also pointed out that Malaysia’s elected officials also listened and implemented Dr Noor Hisham’s advice, and praised the people of Malaysia for adhering to the standard operating procedures enforced by the government during the various phases of the movement control order (MCO).

She compared Dr Noor Hisham’s experience to that of renowned United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease Director Anthony Fauci, who has apparently been receiving death threats while trying to carry out his duty.

I am at the same time very proud of my wise, and hard-working friend and his fellow citizens, and very sad for my home country.

Her post was shared by Dr Noor Hisham on his own page. At the time of writing, his post had garnered 25K likes and over 1,000 shares.

True to his nature, Dr Noor Hisham attributed his success to the collective effort of everyone involved.
