University Malaya students who reminisce their student days aboard the iconic UM busses trundling across campus can now travel back in time (sort of) in a chic tiny home available for rent that’s actually a decommissioned UM student bus!

Available for rent on Airbnb, the remodelled antique student bus sits on the compound of Rumah No.2, Universiti Malaya in Section 16, Petaling Jaya.

The tiny home-concept comes complete with a bedroom, kitchenette, living space, work table, air conditioner, mini fridge and a sink!

Outside, there’s an edible garden along with adorable rabbits and a chicken wandering around.

The entire project began when the university’s former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan asked if there was anything that could be done on the old bus that had been lying unused by the roadside for many years.

The student bus had been lying abandoned in campus since 2013.

And so the students at The Rimba project – an urban biodiversity conservation group- and Water Warriors UM under UM Sustainability & Living Lab Secretariat decided to rescue the old bus from a scrapyard grave.

The group told Malay Mail that the project began last year with refurbishment and renovation works that took 6 months to complete.

While the Movement Control Order (MCO) delayed their intended launch in April to July, it seems that no harm was done with the project going viral on social media.

Two days after images of the transformed student bus were shared on Facebook, it has garnered almost 2,000 shares with impressed Malaysians heaping praises and admiration for the ingenious upcycling project.
