A Malaysian artist has recently been recognised for his cute cat art by landing a collaboration with popular Japanese clothing brand Uniqlo.

Speaking to Malay Mail, Kamwei Fong says that he considers this achievement to be one of the best in his career as an artist.

This collaboration is considered another great achievement added to my career as an artist. I’m Malaysian but I’m not really active in the local art scene.

Kamwei joins three other illustrators — Parisian author Tiffany Cooper, Japanese artist Izuru Aminaka, and Stockholm-based graphic designer Marie Ahfeldt on Uniqlo’s feline-themed T-shirt collection, aptly named “Cats are Purrfect”.

The collection was launched in June here in Malaysia and is already available in numerous countries across the globe, including Japan, Canada, the United Kingdon, France, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Vietnam, Russia, Germany, and many more.

Kamwei’s work mainly consists of cute minimalist drawings of animals whose amazing personalities are brought to life through the lines created by a fine line pen.

Speaking about the personalities of his cat characters, Kamwei told Malay Mail that his felines are often described as poetic, humorous, imaginative, playful, and dream-like.

His most famous creation is arguably a series called The Furry Thing, which consist of these irresistible illustrations of extremely fluffy kitties.

All the kitties in The Furry Thing series have the same DNA, they’re quirky, funny, mysterious, sometimes angry and ridiculous.

One of the felines in this series, Kitty No. 25, is included in Uniqlo’s collection.

According to Kamwei, The Furry Thing came about accidentally back in 2009 and the process of creating the characters felt like meditation which helped him stay focused.

Cats are cool, mysterious creatures with strong characteristics, and my minimalist style cat drawings which often go without mouth, paws, nose, whiskers are my interpretation and imagination of them.

Admitting that he does love all things round and chubby, Kamwei shared that sometimes he draws skinny cats and other animals too.

In the past, Kamwei’s work has been exhibited at the Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris, France, as well as at the Art Expo in Malaysia. Currently, his original art pieces, prints, and ceramic sculptures can be found at the Galerie Club Sensible in Paris.

Kamwei worked as a creative in the advertising, design, and branding industries in Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur for almost 20 years before he became a fulltime artist in 2017.
