Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced today that vehicle licenses can now be renewed for up to 10 years instead of 5 years maximum.

Yes, that means no more waiting in line to get your license every five years. You now have a decade’s worth of time.

To top it off, Loke added that when you renew your license for 10 years, you will only have to pay up to 9 years which is equivalent to a total of RM 270, meaning you get one year free.

In a press conference today, Loke also noted that those seeking to apply for the 10-year license renewal must have a remaining license validity of less than 1 year and must be Malaysian citizens.

However, drivers can choose to renew their licenses for any amount of years, between one to 10.

Additionally, Loke also announced a second initiative for Malaysians whose driving licenses expired from 1 Jan 2018 onwards, to have them renewed without retaking a driving exam.

This is to accommodate Malaysians who were unable to renew their licenses during the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, Malaysians should note that this initiative is only temporarily available until 31 Dec 2023.

The existing condition to retake the drivers test, will be re-enforced from 1 Jan 2024.

Responding to the news, netizens also called for the government to do the same for the Malaysian passport.
