Following the finding of cancer-causing substances present in a Malaysian instant noodle brand by the Taipei Health Department, Malaysia’s Health Ministry has ordered a recall of the affected batch in the local market.

In a statement, Health Director-General Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan said that while the locally produced Ah Lai White Curry Noodles had met local compliance standards, the ministry decided to go ahead with the recall to ensure food safety.

The health ministry has instructed the manufacturer to voluntarily recall the batch that expires on Aug 25 from the local market. Based on a review of data from the Food Safety Information System of Malaysia, the Ministry of Health has also confirmed that Indomie: Special Chicken Flavour noodles from Indonesia had also been imported into Malaysia. The ministry has ordered the company that imported the instant noodles to recall the product from the local market, while tests will be conducted on new batches entering the country.

Dr Radzi also pointed out that the ministry has been conducting tests on various brands of instant noodles available in the local market.

Since 2022 until now, he said, 11 samples of Mi Sedaap produced in Indonesia contained ethylene oxide, a chemical compound associated with lymphoma and leukaemia, which could trigger birth and hereditary defects.

He said legal action was taken, compound notices were issued, and the products were recalled.

Additionally, as reported by the New Straits Times, the company which produces the “Ah Lai White Curry Noodles” has sent their noodles for testing following accusations that a batch of their products contained cancer-causing items.

Responding to the allegations, a spokesperson told NST that the company had shipped a container of the noodles to Taiwan last year with a particular expiry date but the expiry date of the batch tested did not tally with the shipment sent.
