It is no secret that living in poverty pushes people to do the best they can to survive another day.

And this is no different for mothers with their children as well.

An orthopaedic surgeon recently highlighted on Twitter that doctors should always ask what type of milk a mother is giving her child.

In his tweet, @twittimc or Timothy Cheng, said when he asked the mother of a young patient what type of milk her child consumes, the mother’s reply shocked him.

According to Cheng, the mother had to feed her child diluted condensed milk because baby formula was too expensive and they had no money.

Basically the mother is giving condensed milk to the child mixed with water because they have no money to buy milk powder. Yup, social welfare is already on board and we have given a little bit to the mother to at least get some milk for Raya.

Despite food being a point of pride in Malaysia, so much so that we boast having the best cuisine the world over, there are children in Malaysia who are still not getting the nutrition they need.

According to a report by Unicef in 2019, Malaysia faces the threat of a double burden — stunting, and obesity.

This issue, according to the report, is usually caused by children not eating the right food or enough of the right foods.

In Malaysia, 20.7% of children under five suffer from stunting and 11.5% from wasting, 12.7% of children (5–19-year-olds) are obese.

The report also added that it cannot be denied that for many countries, including Malaysia, poverty adversely impacts the food choices of children.

Poor urban areas in Malaysia record higher percentages of malnourished children than the national average indicates.

In the comment section, netizens shared their thoughts on the issue as well.

Twitter user @ChrisanneChin shared:

I had a similar experience. Offered to buy milk powder for them but the father immediately rejected. He told me that if the child tasted the good, they will never want to drink the old again. And it would make his life a nightmare! Made me realise how low civil servants were paid.

That’s sad and I hope she gets the help she needs. But I always say this coming from B40 myself — family planning. It’s traumatic for me to grow up poor, torn clothes, being teased and to bear relatives’ comments because we asked so many things. The duty is on the couple to plan well to have a child.

Meanwhile Twitter user @NurulShima_3 shared her experience with a similar experience.

There was once when my child had finished the milk and we were financially tight at that time. My body was also not producing milk. I could only afford to feed my child boiled water. So if there is a mother who is in trouble financially and has no money to buy the child’s needs, I don’t calculate, I just help. Because I have experienced it.
