Hari Raya is just around the corner and if you are looking to have movie time with your family and friends, then you should check out the list below of movies that are usually repeated every year.

Senario Series

When you talk about famous movie franchises in the Malaysian Film Industry, Senario definitely comes to mind.

It is one of the longest film series in Malaysian film history made up of ten movies. Grand Brilliance produced six which included the original trilogy of the Senario films, directed by Aziz M.Osman; Senario The Movie (1999), Senario Lagi (2000), and Lagi-Lagi Senario (2001).

Ahmad Idham is the director of Senario The Movie: Episode 1 (2008) and Senario The Movie: Episode 2: Beach Boys (2009).

Four of the films in the series are among the highest-grossing local films ever, making it the highest-grossing film series of all time. For nine years, Lagi-Lagi Senario held the record for the highest grossing movie at the box office.

Mami Jarum Junior

Mami Jarum Junior is a comedy that featured the northern part of the Peninsular, particularly Penang, released in 2003, and is a follow-up to the 2002 film Mami Jarum.

It tells the story of Rita who enjoys gossiping and upsetting other people’s lives.

I Know What You Did Last Raya

Inspired by the Hollywood movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer”, this is the Malaysian comedy version of it.

The main characters of this movie are a group of friends named Dr Mira, Lan, Fazzly, Yasir, and Shahida who accidentally run over a man and a goat while returning to their village. They began receiving messages on the eve of Hari Raya that start with the words “Aku Tahu,” which indicated that someone was aware of the hit-and-run occurrence.

Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham

This is obviously not a local movie but is a beloved Hari Raya screening nonetheless. Most Malaysians would have watched it at least once in their lifetime.

The movie is about a father abandoning his adopted son because the latter choose to marry a girl from a lower status. The movie is about love and family and the theme fits perfectly with an occasion where families get together to celebrate Hari Raya.

Prepare your ketupat rendang and tissues as this movie will bring you on a roller-coaster ride of emotions.

Adnan Sempit

This movie narrates what happens when two different characters from various backgrounds stumble upon each other in their journey of life.

Adnan is an orphan who was protected and raised by his aunt when he was a young child after hid dad’s passing and Nadia is a successful career woman from an affluent family. They stumble upon each other in a bizarre situation and their relationship starts from there.

It may sound like a lot of drama, but do not worry as this one will surely provide laughter.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Another Bollywood pick, this story starts with a daughter deciding to unite her widowed father Rahul with his old friend Anjali. She finds out from her late mother’s letters that Anjali used to love her father.

This is another Bollywood classic that Malaysians enjoy revisiting especially with its theme of pyar dosti (love, friendship). Watch Bollywood’s favourite on-screen couple and their love story this Hari Raya with your loved ones.

Istanbul Aku Datang

This is another love story that proves to us that ‘one should not chase after love’ rather wait for it to happen in our life.

The story starts with a young woman’s journey from Malaysia to Istanbul in the hopes that her boyfriend Adaz will pop the question to her. When she is forced to remain with shy artist Harris, things get complicated.

What is the complication? How is it resolved? Watch to find out.

Mukhsin

Have you ever heard of a platonic relationship. If not then watch this film to find out what it is all about.

12-year-old Mukhsin (Mohd Syafie Naswip) becomes acquainted with 10-year-old Orked (Sharifah Aryana) and soon begins to harbour feelings for her. His affection for her torments him, yet their connection is still platonic. A Yasmin Ahmad classic, next to Sepet, this movie is yet another Hari Raya favourite.

Zombie Kampung Pisang

This comedy horror film takes place in a village. The commotion begins when the village’s bilal Pak Abu dies suddenly after falling from his bicycle on his way home. Trouble begins after Husin, Atan, and Mat Karan helped to carry Pak Abu back to his house.

Hantu Kak Limah

Another comedy horror to add to the list. This film has a series to it but the recent one which was released in 2018 seems to be the favourite of many.

The story begins with Husin, who leaves Singapore and returns to his village and would soon include Kak Limah who was horribly murdered.

Kung Fu Hustle

Actual gangsters arrive in this Shanghai shantytown to reclaim their feared name after the foolish Sing and his dim-witted friend Bone attempt to con the locals into believing they are members of the renowned Axe Gang.

If you are a Stephen Chow fan and prefer an action packed Hari Raya afternoon, this one’s for you, complete with slick movements of Kung Fu and some mind-blowing stunts.

Duyung

Duyung is a fantasy comedy movie about a misunderstood village outcast and what happens to him when he meets a pretty mermaid.

Jangan Pandang Belakang Congkak

Havo you ever heard of folklores and maybe sometimes your grandparents telling you not to touch something or to avoid certain places. Well, sometimes it is best that you listen to them.

Three young men were invited to a mysterious man’s home by a letter they each received from Pak Sudir. They then learn that Pak Sudir was their grandfather and that, if they can meet all the requirements, they will inherit all of Pak Sudir’s possessions. They must however spend three consecutive nights in the house and are forbidden from touching anything, especially an old “congkak.”

Enjoy this horror which also packs a lot of humour that you will have stomach pains at the end of the movie.

Cinta Kolestrol

A deal between the families of Haji Zaini and Datuk Osman, who wanted their two children to someday get married, is the subject of this movie. This arrangement was made following an incident that occurred when Ahmad Yusry (son of Haji Zaini) and Fazira (son of Datuk Osman) were still young.

Will the deal they made come to fruition?
