Police said they arrested a local 34-year-old man following the incident in which 13 motorcycles and 4 electric scooters were destroyed in a fire outside the Suria KLCC shopping yesterday.

The suspect has been remanded for six days, according to Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Noor Dellhan Yahaya.

Noor Dellhan said the motive and cause of the incident are still under investigation and the case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire.

This offence, according to the law, is punishable with a maximum jail sentence of 14 years and a fine.

Moreover, Noor Dellhan said a Honda RS type motorcycle, a set of motorcycle keys, a helmet, a shirt, a pair of trousers, an arm sleeve, a bag, a watch and a lighter have been confiscated.

Earlier, the e-scooter company Beam said none of its electric vehicles were responsible for the fire.

“Beam has been made aware that a number of its e-scooters were seriously damaged by a fire caused by a private motorcycle igniting nearby. However, we would like to reiterate that our vehicles were not the cause of the fire.”

Beam also added that it was relieved that no passers-by were harmed in the accident, and expressed their deepest sympathies with the owners of the other private motorcycles that were damaged by the fire.

“We applaud the authorities for their quick response to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading and causing further damage.”

Additionally, Beam also noted that safety is their utmost priority as they have always maintained their use of tech hardware of the highest grades.

This includes the batteries installed in each Beam e-scooter, which follow international safety certifications.
