Birthdays have always been that one day in the year that’s all about you, for 24 hours you’re the centre of attention and nothing else matters. Most people can relate to this experience, which is why it was a pleasant surprise to see 4-year-old Jarrett dedicate his birthday to helping the needy in the midst of this pandemic.

Prompted by his kindergarten, The Mustard Seed School, Jarrett and his classmates were tasked to think of a way to help the needy as an assignment called “Fifty for the Needy”.

As his birthday was approaching on 18th July, Jarrett’s parents asked him how he wanted to celebrate and he cooked up the idea to make his favourite snack for the needy, peanut butter and chocolate sandwiches.

Even at a young age, Jarrett is aware of the hardships that Malaysians are going through during the pandemic and was compelled to find a way to help them out.

Jarrett’s mother was so proud of the choice he made. “We couldn’t be prouder of Jarrett for embarking on such a selfless act, we were prepared to buy him toys as we usually do but he insisted that this was how he wanted to spend his birthday”, she said.

Jarrett with the help of his 7-year-old sister, Maya, spent a good chunk of 18th July making 50 sandwiches and packing them into containers for the needy. Jarrett also drew up a poster that was put out on Facebook and WhatsApp to campaign for donations.

They would then go on to send the sandwiches to their local community petrol station, Caltex Setia Alam, that has an ongoing food bank drive where generous souls can help stock up the shelves with food and essential items. In a matter of two days, he was able to raise RM2,300 through 54 donors that was chanelled back to Caltex’s food bank drive via his kindergarten.

“I am very happy that I got to spend my birthday sharing my favourite sandwich with the needy, I hope this brightens up their day!” said a cheerful Jarrett.

Jarrett’s mother implored others to practice acts of kindness in any way they can. “We certainly need to celebrate little wins and continue towards encouraging one another at all times”, she further said.

If you have the means to support the needy with essential items and groceries, Caltex is running their food bank initiative at select stations. Drop by your nearest participating Caltex station and donate what you can.

In addition to the initiative, Caltex stations are also delivering essential items to members in their communities as a means to support them during this difficult time.
