[Review] Is The New KFC Burger Banjir Saucy Enough To Drown In?

I walked in prepared to hate it and walked out pleasantly impressed.

KFC’s latest limited-time offering is touted as a Zinger burger patty banjir (flooded) with smoked Grill BBQ sauce. But while it may sound appetizing in theory, does it really translate well into a burger or will it end up a soggy mess? I find out.

The Taste Test

Upon unwrapping, the Burger Banjir does look well-slathered in sauce, but falls short of “dripping”. Depending on whether or not you like extremely saucy burgers, this could be a pro or a con.

For me, it was a pleasant surprise. While I do enjoy a copious amount of sauce with my food, I am also not a fan of burgers that drown in sauce which becomes the only thing you taste. (The large amount of love for super sloppy roadside burger stalls suggests that I might be in the minority here.)

Hence, the amount of sauce on the burger was just right for me- still generously saucy and evenly coated around the whole fried chicken patty.

Now, onto the sauce itself. For context, I also dislike generic barbeque sauce often served at Western food eateries, because I find them overpowering, taking away the taste of the food itself.

While I have also tried (and loved) absolutely delicious artisanal barbeque sauce, I did not have high hopes for a fast food chain: after all, the point of fast food is speed and efficiency, and I was mentally prepared to wade through overwhelmingly generic and disappointing barbeque sauce.

Yet colour me surprised when I found the sauce to be a delightful balance of savoury and peppery with sweet undertones. Perhaps due to the sweetness, I found it almost similar to a marmite sauce, or a milder sweet-and-sour sauce. Yet it also had a classic barbeque kick to it, leaving a delicious tingle in the mouth.

The sauce goes extremely well with the fried Zinger chicken patty (which was also extremely generous– a portion that was significantly larger than the burger buns!), resulting in a satisfying texture of wet sauce and fried crunchiness.

Additionally, the taste of the juicy chicken patty is not lost, as it shines through the generous sauce, which is a big win in my book.

The Verdict

Basically, this Burger Banjir is a Zinger burger except the cheese sauce has been swapped out for the smoked barbeque sauce. (Although if you miss the KFC Cheezy Sauce, the Aneka set also comes with Cheezy Wedges.)

I walked into the store prepared to hate this burger (in fact, I told my editor “I’m not expecting much from it”, but I’m glad to have been wrong), yet this Burger Bajir has more than exceeded all my (admittedly low) expectations.

The burger was quite satisfying, and the sauce was very enjoyable. I must commend KFC on their limited-time menus which often employs new sauces and seasonings instead of rehashing old ones: as such, this smoked barbeque flavour is a novel one.

In terms of flavour, taste, and mouthfeel, this is a very well-executed burger that hits the mark instead of turning into a soggy, bottled-sauce disaster.

As a whole, I found this burger surprisingly enjoyable, and would not be surprised if this becomes a permanent addition to the menu.

The burger starts from RM12.49 for a la carte and you can get an additional 10% off with the promo code BANJIR via KFC Delivery or the app.
