A man has been arrested in Teluk Bahang by the police to assist in investigations after a viral video surfaced recently which showed a baby being fed with alcohol.

Kamarul Rizal said the five-month-old baby boy was sent to the hospital for further examination and was reported to be in good health.

He said investigations reveal that the man has 14 previous criminal records to his name and was also a person under surveillance.

Heavy penalties for reckless behaviour

The 19-year-old will be remanded and the case is being investigated under Section 31 (1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998.

Under the Child Act, the suspect can be fined up to RM20,000 or jail time of not more than ten years or both.

Meanwhile, upon conviction, he will be liable to a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment for a term of not more than one year or both under the CMA.

The law also states that he will also be liable to a further fine of RM1,000 for every day during which the offence is continued after conviction.

Alcohol a big no for children

The National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom has advised children and young people to not drink alcohol before the age of 18 as its use during the teenage years is related to a wide range of health and social problems.

They said that drinking alcohol is damaging towards a child’s health, even if they’re 15 or older.

It has the ability to affect the normal development of vital organs and functions, including the brain, liver, bones and hormones.
