The Ministry of Education will take in 18,702 new teachers in a new one-off intake process to close the teacher shortage gap, announced Senior Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin in a special press conference today (20 July).

He said that the solution was discussed and agreed upon by the Ministry of Education (KPN), the Public Service Department (JPN), and the Education Service Commission (SPP).

This new one-off approach involves adopting subject option clusters, whereby the applicant’s qualifications are divided into clusters to create large pools of candidates.

It also includes a diversity of appointment methods that utilise different approaches. While it will prioritise graduates in education, the ministry would also look at graduates of other professions to complete the numbers needed.

This approach, said Dr Radzi, requires the cooperation of various departments. It is hoped that it will result in the intake of 18,702 grade DG41 education service officers.

Dr Radzi admits that these are big numbers in such a short time, but it is needed to remedy the long-running issue of the lack of teachers.

“The one-off intake is designed to close the shortage gap and create a new baseline for us to move forward. After that, managing the gap between the supply of teachers and the demand for teachers would be easier,” said Dr Radzi.

He added that the Ministry of Education would, in the future, recruit teachers through the normal procedures.

Where teachers are needed

Meanwhile, Dr Radzi shared the statistics that show the four states in Malaysia that have the highest number of vacancies for teachers are Sabah, Sarawak, Johor, and Selangor.

In primary schools, he noted that there is a shortage of teachers for subjects such as English, History, Special Education, Islamic Education, and Information Technology and Communications.

Secondary schools, on the other hand, need more teachers for subjects such as Malay Language, English, Special Education, Islamic Education, and Design and Technology.

The intake process will begin on 7 July and the placements of these new teachers will be made beginning in October this year.
