Only residents and citizens of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will get to perform the pilgrimage this year because of the current global Covid-19 situation. That means no Malaysians will get to perform the Hajj during the upcoming 1442H Hajj season, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Senator Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri.

For many Malaysians, going for Hajj is a once in a lifetime opportunity. A culmination of a lifetime of saving and waiting. To hear this news must be heartbreaking for most of them.

In previous years, before the pandemic, millions of Muslims from all around the world congregated in the holy city of Mecca to perform the Hajj. Worshippers would fill the colossal Masjid al-Haram and spill over to the streets.

This year only 60,000 people, residents of all nationalities and citizens inside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, will be permitted to perform the holy ritual.

Zulkifli said the Lembaga Tabung Haji would manage all the affairs of Malaysians who are already there and had been selected to perform the Haj, in accordance with the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by Saudi Arabia.

“Indeed, ‘hifz al-nafs’ (preserving life) is one of the principles of Maqasid Syariah that is always upheld by the Malaysian government in taking any decision,” he added.
